HISTORY OF BILAL BIN RABBAH

Bilal bin Rabbah became the first muezzin in Islam and stopped calling the call to prayer after

the death of the Prophet Muhammad sallallaahu 'alaihi wasallam. He is known as the first call to

prayer (muezzin), who marks the call to prayer as a sign of the entry of prayer times.

Bilal was born in the As Sarah area approximately 43 years before the Hijrah (578 AD). He

was the son of Rabah and Hamamah who were slaves in Mecca. Bilal inherited black skin so he

was often nicknamed ibnus sauda (son of a black woman). Bilal's stature is described as tall, thin,

slightly bent, thick hair, and black skin.

Beginning to Convert to Islam

The story of Bilal's introduction to Islam began when he was still a slave to Umayyah bin

Khalaf of Bani Jumuh. Many of the people of Makkah talked about the Prophet, including

Umayyah bin Khalaf, Bilal's employer. Many people hate it, but not a few are amazed by its glory.

Bilal bin Rabah knew that they were actually amazed and could not understand the teachings

brought by the Prophet Muhammad. Some of them said to others, “Muhammad never lied or

became a sorcerer. Nor is he crazy or changed his mind. However, we are forced to accuse him of

that in order to stem people from competing to convert to his religion.”

The hatred of the Quraish infidels at that time even more convinced Bilal. He believed that

the religion brought by the Prophet Muhammad was a real truth for him. When the preaching of

the Prophet Muhammad heard Bilal, he was interested and declared himself converted to Islam in

front of the Prophet Muhammad. Since then, his faith is getting stronger every day in embracing

this religion.

After that, Bilal bin Rabah's secret Islamic news was smelled and circulated among the

Quraysh infidels, including Umayyah bin Khalaf. Hearing his slave converted to Islam, Umayyad

was very angry. Bilal bin Rabah was then tortured by the Umayyads without stopping. Bilal's neck

was tied with date ropes and he was dragged like an animal until his whole body bled. Even more

cruel, the children of the disbelievers were ordered to drag him to the hills of Mecca. But Bilal was

silent with resignation and did not show any pain.

Bilal bin Rabah by his employer stretched out, then on his chest was placed a large and heavy

stone so that it was difficult for him to move. This cruel torture was repeated every day to force

Bilal to return to the religion of his ancestors. Bilal was forced to mention Latta and Uzza, the two

idols they worshiped. However, he still maintains his faith by mentioning the word "Sunday,

Sunday".

However, Bilal remained strong and only asked Allah. He absolutely did not want to leave

Islam as his employer asked him to. He always said "Sunday...Sunday..." as a form of sincerity to

love and unite God. Allah's help then came through Abu Bakr As Siddiq. Bilal was redeemed from

the hands of Umayyah bin Khalaf, then freed from his status as a slave. Then, Bilal joined other

Muslims as a free person.

Bilal the Muezzin

Since his release from slavery, Bilal spent more time with the Prophet Muhammad. His

closeness made Bilal highly respected and glorified by his friends. Bilal also made history as the

first muezzin in Islam.

This incident occurred at the time of the migration of the Prophet Muhammad to Medina.

Bilal was invited to join the group. The people there also began to build a mosque which is now

known as the Prophet's Mosque.

After the construction of the mosque was completed, Bilal was appointed by the Prophet

Muhammad to give the call to prayer. Bilal has a loud and melodious voice. Since then, the call to

prayer has been used as a sign of the entry of the five daily prayers.

There is a habit that Bilal does after pronouncing the call to prayer. He would stand in front

of Prophet Muhammad's house saying, "Hayya 'alash shalaah hayya 'alash shalaah". As soon as

the Prophet began to appear out of his house, the iqamat would be recited and the congregational

prayer would begin.

Bilal became a muezzin until the end of the Prophet Muhammad's life. However, after the

death of the Prophet, Bilal was never able to finish his call to prayer. Once his love for the Prophet,

Bilal's voice will falter when reciting the sentence "ashhadu anna Muhammadar Rasulullah".

CERITA BILAL BIN RABBAH

adzan setelah wafatnya Nabi Muhammad shallallahu alaihi wasallam.

hitam sehingga kerap dijuluki ibnus sauda (putra wanita hitam). Perawakan Bilal digambarkan

terkecuali Umayyah bin Khalaf, majikan Bilal.

quraisy, termasuk Umayyah bin Khalaf. Mendengar budaknya masuk Islam, Umayyah sangat

marah.

Bilal kembali memeluk agama nenek moyangnya.

Dia selalu mengucapkan "Ahad...Ahad..."

sebagai bentuk ketulusan mencintai dan mentauhidkan Allah. Pertolongan Allah lantas datang

melalui Abu Bakar As Siddiq. Bilal ditebus dari tangan Umayyah bin Khalaf, lalu dimerdekakan

dari statusnya sebagai budak. Lalu, Bilal bergabung bersama kaum muslimin lain sebagai orang

yang bebas.

Bilal Sang Muazin

depan rumah Nabi Muhammad seraya mengatakan, "Hayya 'alash shalaah hayya 'alash shalaah".

dimulai.

Bilal menjadi muazin sampai akhir hayat Nabi Muhammad. Namun, setelah wafatnya Nabi,
